During his introductory press conference as the newest member of the Buffalo Bills, receiver Terrell Owens was asked about his history of “selfishness and divisiveness.” Said Owens: “That’s all hearsay.” “If you look at all of the comments that have come from all of my teammates with the Cowboys, it’s all been positive,” Owens said. “Prior to that, I can’t really . . . I don’t really want to get into it. I’ll let my teammates speak highly and I think they have done that. They’ve spoken and they speak loudly as to what transpired.” The problem is that, while some teammates have spoken out in favor of Owens, others have given harsh off-the-record criticisms of Owens. And, let’s face it, Owens wouldn’t have a host of players and coaches throughout the league with whom he couldn’t coexist if it were “all hearsay.” Meanwhile, plenty of readers assume that he’ll be on his best behavior during 2009, given the trouble he caused in Dallas. The problem, however, is that Owens doesn’t acknowledge, presumably not even to himself, that he did anything he shouldn’t have done while a member of the Cowboys. So he won’t see a need to change. So, in time, it will be more of the same. Meanwhile, Owens claimed at the press conference that other teams were interested, but he declined to name the teams. Finally, Bills COO Russ Brandon oddly pulled out the “no comment” card when asked about whether Owens had signed a one-year contract or a multi-year deal. Well, at least Brandon didn’t say, “Next question.”
