Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo broke a bone in his back when he got hit by Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril in the third preseason game for both teams, an action that has made Avril the recipient of some unpleasant messages on social media over the last week.
Avril said that messages from “Twitter thugs” have been dying down over the last couple of days and that there were no hard feelings from Romo. Avril said that he’s been in contact with the quarterback, who is expected to miss up to 10 weeks but clearly isn’t thinking about shutting things down for the season.
“I hit him up to see how he was doing and to let him know it wasn’t intentional,” Avril told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Friday. “He hit me back saying it was football and it was a freak accident. He started joking and saying ‘You take care of the NFC West and we will see you in the playoffs.’”
Whether Romo is joking or not will have a lot to do with how Dak Prescott does during the veteran’s absence from the lineup. Prescott’s preseason play made him a popular man in Dallas and keeping it up against the more complex defenses that he’ll see in the regular season could leave the Cowboys in good shape in a division that doesn’t appear to have a runaway favorite.
