Trent Edwards starts training camp as Bills starter

Buffalo’s three-way competition at quarterback finally has a leader, and it’s the guy everyone expected.

Trent Edwards received the majority of time with the first-team offense on day one of Bills training camp. Coach Chan Gailey said before camp there would be a pecking order, even though the competition wasn’t over.

Ryan Fitzpatrick lined up with the second team, and Brian Brohm went third. So basically it lined up just how most personnel evaluators and fans would expect it to. Edwards now just has to keep the job during camp and the preseason.

While Edwards has proven injury-prone and often hesitant behind a terrible offensive line, he’s also showed flashes of potential in his second season. Fitzpatrick doesn’t have a strong arm and is a known quantity. He’s a backup. Edwards has a higher ceiling, and has adapted to the NFL far better than Brohm.

We don’t love that the Bills didn’t bring in a quarterback this offseason, but the decision only made sense if they turned the keys over to Edwards to see what he can do.
