The fine folks at USA Today (I’ve been buying that paper since 1984 and I still buy it nearly every day) launched last Friday a non-scientific poll aimed regarding various categories of NFL broadcasting.
The results appear in today’s edition of the paper. But there’s a minor glitch.
The polls are still open.
Though there has yet to be a “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment, it’s getting close. In the print edition, Phil Simms of CBS has 30 percent of the vote, and Cris Collinsworth of NBC has 25 percent. Since press time, when there were 7,407 votes, another 1,792 ballots and counting have been cast, cutting Simms’ lead to three points.
In our back-and-forth with Adam Schefter of ESPN, his four-point lead as of press time (with 8,621 votes) has become (as of post time) a 27-27 percent dead heat, with 10,388 total votes.
In one key category, the extra voting time has allowed NBC’s Football Night in America to overcome CBS for third place in the best pregame show category.
One category that likely won’t get much closer is best studio show, in which ESPN’s NFL Matchup has scored a landslide win over ESPN’s NFL Live, Showtime’s Inside the NFL, NFL Network’s Total Access, and NFL Network’s Playbook.
Maybe that will prompt ESPN to finally give the show a better time slot.
