Two weeks after the Vikings parted ways with coach Leslie Frazier, the team continues to look for the next man to run a franchise that soon will be 40 years removed from its last Super Bowl appearance.
Per a league source, the Vikings still have no timetable for filling the job. The team is taking a methodical approach, considering multiple qualified candidates.
Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s name has gained momentum in recent days, especially in light of the decision to give him a second interview. But the Vikings also could be intent on taking a closer look at Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Because Minnesota interviewed both of them during the wild-card bye week, the Vikings can interview either or both for a second time next week, if the Seahawks qualify for the Super Bowl.
And don’t forget about the Broncos coordinators. Minnesota may decide to wait for a chance to talk to Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase and/or defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. Neither were interviewed during the Broncos’ bye week; the Vikings would have to wait until Denver’s season ends before talking to them.
Meanwhile, Vikings fans will wait for an answer on the question of who the team will hire -- and whether he’ll be closer to Bud Grant or Les Steckel on the Minnesota coaching continuum.
