Welker’s family “absolutely sick” about injury

The father of New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker says the family is heartbroken about the knee injury that Welker suffered in today’s game against the Houston Texans.

“We’re sick,” Leland Welker told Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe. “We’re absolutely sick. We take all those hits and stuff all season long. And then just one fluke cut, and he just blows it out.”

Although Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the game that he didn’t have an update on Welker’s condition -- and although a complete diagnosis can’t be made until Welker has an MRI -- Welker’s dad seems to have concluded what just about everyone watching the game concluded: Welker’s injury is serious, and he won’t be on the field in the playoffs.

Leland Welker, who was watching the game on TV, said his wife spoke to Wes on the phone.

“He was really upset,” Leeland Welker said. “He didn’t feel like talking about it too much. . . . This is the worst we’ve ever encountered.”
