The foray of linebacker Jason Worilds into the free-agent market ended abruptly, with Worilds announcing his retirement on Tuesday night. He already has his next career move planned.
According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Worilds will be retiring to work for Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“We respect his decision to retire and thank him for his five years in Pittsburgh,” the Steelers said in a statement. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
The Steelers believe the explanation from the player is genuine. The timing suggests that Worilds made the decision after getting a chance to process the offers that were, or weren’t, available on the open market. Otherwise, the decision would have come at some point before the first evening after the market opened.
And there’s nothing wrong with that. Before choosing to walk away from another NFL contract, Worilds needed to know exactly what he was walking away from.
