Amid reports that Redskins running back Clinton Portis and fullback Mike Sellers are currently at odds after Portis reportedly lobbied for Sellers to be benched during Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Buccaneers, coach Jim Zorn claims there’s no problem between the duo.
“These guys love each other,” Zorn said in comments distributed by the team. “They absolutely love each other. This is just how a team goes. These guys are like brothers and they care about each other. That is really between them. Seriously it is not an issue.”
Zorn’s internally inconsistent Gollum-style monologue is no surprise. Surely, he won’t be spilling the beans about the possible desire of Portis and Sellers to spill some of each other’s blood.
Earlier this year, Zorn tried to soft pedal the fact that, during offseason workouts, Portis openly disrespected Zorn. This time around, with the vultures circling the coming carcass of Zorn’s head-coaching career and a “consultant” being hired to help soften the blow when Zorn is fired (presumably after the October 26 Monday night game against the Eagles), Zorn’s got bigger things to worry about than a locker-room problem between two frustrated players on a frustratingly underachieving team that has the talent to be successful but that, for whatever reason, can’t get it done.
