D.J. Humphries won’t be on the field for the Commanders on Sunday.
The Commanders announced that they have released Humphries on Friday. The veteran offensive tackle joined the team on August 26.
When Humphries was signed, he was seen as a potential part of the plan to replace left tackle Laremy Tunsil this season. Tunsil tore his triceps this summer and Brandon Coleman was installed in his spot on the offensive line, but Humphries was an experienced option for Washington to consider.
Humphries’s salary for the entire season would have been guaranteed if he was on the roster for the Week 1 game against the Eagles, so the Commanders could opt to bring him back at a later date but, for now, Humphries is free to sign with any team.
Linebacker Jonathan Greenard has been practicing for the Eagles this week, but it remains unclear whether he’ll be on the field against the Commanders on Sunday.
Greenard did not practice at all this summer due to a pectoral injury and has been listed as limited on the first two injury reports of the week. Friday will bring another practice and the issuing of injury designations that could shed more light on whether the offseason acquisition will be part of the Week 1 plan.
“They haven’t told me anything,” Greenard said Thursday, via Reuben Frank of NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com. “I just know I’ve been getting right, going through the motions of just trying to get back into the swing of things before I get fully thrown out there. But it’s something every day. So I just listen to them. I trust their judgment. I’m literally just trying to work day by day. Like, I literally am out there every second trying to just show what I can do. And that’s tough for them, but I feel pretty solid. . . . It’s not for me to decide. I feel good, though. I will say I feel I’m in a good spot. I know that I’m working every day to continue to try to get this thing stronger. We’re close. I know that.”
Greenard will likely play a reduced number of snaps if he is active against Washington, but the Eagles will take whatever they can get if Greenard is ready to start helping the team’s pass rush.
The Commanders added defensive tackle Daron Payne to their injury report on Thursday. They list him as limited with a knee injury.
That is not a good sign for the team ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Eagles.
The Commanders also added defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw to Thursday’s report, but he was a full participant with a back injury.
Outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson (knee), running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) and outside linebacker Odafe Oweh (calf) remained limited a second consecutive day.
Center Mick Allegretti (calf), linebacker Jordan Magee (chest), quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee), defensive end Charles Omenihu (wrist) and tight end Ben Sinnott (oblique) were full participants again.
Tress Way has been a member of the Commanders for more than a decade, but it sounds like they’re going to have to start planning for life without him.
Way will begin his 13th season with the team on Sunday and he announced on Thursday that he expects it to be his final one as an NFL player.
“I am pretty sure this is gonna be my last season,” Way said, via Nicki Jhabvala of TheAthletic.com.
Way joined the Commanders in 2014 after being waived by the Bears and he has appeared in every game for the team over the last 12 years. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2019. He is currently tied for fifth in games played in franchise history and will be No. 3 on the list if he plays in every game this season.
Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard returned to practice on Wednesday, and the Eagles’ practice report shows he was limited.
That was expected as he works his way back from a pectoral injury.
Greenard missed all of training camp after straining a pectoral muscle while lifting weights earlier in the summer. He went on the active/physically unable to perform list but chose not to move him to reserve/PUP.
That indicates the Eagles expect Greenard to play sometime in the first four weeks.
The Eagles traded for Greenard in April, sending two third-round draft picks to the Vikings for the star pass rusher. Philadelphia then signed him to a four-year, $100 million extension.
Rookie tight end Eli Stowers (hamstring) was the only other player on the team’s injury report. He also was limited.
The Commanders listed three of their starters as limited participants in practice on their first injury report of the 2026 season.
Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (groin) joined linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson (knee) and Odafe Oweh (calf) in that category.
Croskey-Merritt is the top back on a depth chart that also includes Rachaad White and Kaytron Allen. Chaisson and Oweh are joined by Joshua Josephs and Javontae Jean-Baptiste on the edges of the Commanders defense.

The Eagles welcomed a veteran defensive player back to the practice field on Wednesday.
Reporters at the open portion of practice shared that linebacker Jonathan Greenard was suited up and on the field. Greenard missed all of training camp with a pec injury.
Head coach Nick Sirianni did not share the practice outlook for Greenard at a press conference earlier in the day and did not offer much of a prediction about whether Greenard will be in the lineup against the Commanders this weekend.
“We’ll see where that is by the end of the week,” Sirianni said.
The team’s injury report will provide more word about Greenard’s participation level, but his presence on the field is a step in the right direction for his eventual appearance on the defense in Philadelphia.
The Eagles did not specify whether Tanner McKee or Andy Dalton will be their backup quarterback when they released their depth chart for Week 1 and head coach Nick Sirianni passed on a chance to do so during a Wednesday press conference as well.
McKee and Dalton were both listed with the second team on the depth chart and Sirianni said he doesn’t want to give the Commanders a chance to prepare for either of the reserve quarterbacks ahead of Sunday’s game.
“We don’t have to make that decision quite yet or announce that decision for competitive reasons,” Sirianni said. “I don’t want them to study one guy over the other. I’m not saying we don’t have an answer of who that is yet, but I don’t just have to share that quite yet publicly.”
It’s unlikely that any team will spend much time getting ready for an Eagles quarterback other than Jalen Hurts, but Sirianni isn’t taking any chances and the wait to find out who will be the next man up may stretch all the way until inactive lists are revealed on Sunday.
The number five is important to Jayden Daniels, so perhaps it’s appropriate that he’s one of five captains on the Commanders this season.
Washington announced that Daniels was chosen as a team captain alongside wide receiver Terry McLaurin, linebacker Frankie Luvu, safety Jeremy Reaves and punter Tress Way.
Daniels said he thinks being named a team captain is a natural extension of the leadership he exudes as the Commanders’ starting quarterback.
“I just think it comes with reps here. Going into my third camp, my third year, I have more of a voice and you mature more over the years,” Daniels said. “You play a lot of ball. You go do a lot of different things on and off the field, so you’re gonna mature in this league. So now it’s kind of just being more intentional with not only myself but getting the guys around me ready and rallying the troops.”
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has previously named weekly captains for the team rather than letting the players elect season-long captains, but he said this year that’s one of the things he’d like to change, as he wanted the team to vote for players who represent the standards the Commanders want to set.
Wide receiver Van Jefferson did not make the cut to the 53-man roster in Washington, but he’s rejoining the Commanders ahead of their season opener.
According to multiple reports, Jefferson will sign with the team’s practice squad. Jefferson initially signed with the team in March and was let go at the end of August.
Jefferson had 29 catches for 350 yards and a touchdown while with the Titans last season. He opened his career with the Rams and spent three-plus seasons with the team before a midseason trade to the Falcons in 2023. He played for the Steelers in 2024.
Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, third-round pick Antonio Williams, Dyami Brown, Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane are the wideouts on the active roster for the Commanders.
