Rams signed RB Quinn Porter off the Browns’ practice squad.
With Steven Jackson (quad) sidelined, the Rams are acquiring depth. Porter has previously spent time with the Packers and Redskins before signing on in Cleveland on a reserve/futures deal. He could get a chance to return kicks on Monday night.
  • LA Running Back #35
Rams waived RB Quinn Porter, DB Nate Ness, DT John Henderson, TE DeMarco Cosby, and CB Chris Smith.
Teams can carry 90 men on the offseason roster and the Rams might be the most talent-poor club in football, so these moves bode poorly for these players’ long-term outlooks. Porter, a former undrafted rookie running back out of Stillman College, saw some time on St. Louis’ active roster last season.
  • Running Back
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Steven Jackson (quad) is “questionable to doubtful” for Week 3 against the Ravens.
Jackson returned to limited practice Thursday, but “didn’t get much work in.” His backup Cadillac Williams is also looking dicey for Week 3 after missing two consecutive practices with a hamstring injury. If neither is able to give it a go against the Ravens, the Rams would be forced to go with a tandem of Jerious Norwood and Quinn Porter at running back. It’s a situation to avoid against a Ravens’ front seven that has neutralized the run early on this season.
  • LA Running Back #35
Redskins signed RB Quinn Porter to their practice squad.
Porter is healthy now after spraining his MCL in Packers camp this summer. With only Ryan Torain and Chad Simpson healthy and active, Porter is worth tracking in D.C. We’re tentatively expecting Keiland Williams to be promoted from the practice squad this weekend to act as the No. 2 back against Green Bay.

The Cowboys worked out nine free agents Tuesday, including former Packers RB Quinn Porter.
The Cowboys would only be kicking Porter’s tires for a practice squad spot, but the work out suggests he’s over his preseason MCL sprain. Also working out: S Quintin Demps, C Eric Ghiaciuc, OT Xavier Fulton, RB Alphonso Smith, S DeVon Hall, and CB Ross Weaver.
  • LA Running Back #35
Browns signed RB Quinn Porter, OTs Phil Trautwein and Branndon Braxton, OG Pat Murray, TE Tyson DeVree, FB Tyler Clutts, and DB DeAngelo Smith to reserve/futures contracts.
Porter was expected to make the Packers out of camp last summer, but his season was derailed by a sprained MCL. He spent time on the Redskins’ practice squad before landing in Cleveland. The Stillman college product will fight for a spot behind Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty next summer.
  • LA Running Back #35
According to coach Mike McCarthy via beat writer Mike Vandermause, the knee sprain RB Quinn Porter suffered in Thursday’s preseason game against the Colts is “serious.”
That should be the nail in the coffin to Porter’s chances of making the final 53, as Kregg Lumpkin now becomes the heavy favorite to win the No. 3 RB job.
  • FA Running Back
Kregg Lumpkin rushed nine times for 26 yards and a touchdown in Thursday’s preseason matchup against the Colts.
Lumpkin hadn’t practiced of late due to a hamstring injury, but he entered the game ahead of Quinn Porter (three rushes, 12 yards). The coaching staff probably wanted to give Lumpkin a good look before deciding which back will enter the season third on the depth chart. James Starks (hamstring) is still without a timetable for a return.
  • FA Running Back
According to Jason Wilde of ESPN 540 Milwaukee, rookie James Starks (hamstring) is “almost assured” of starting the season on the PUP list.
Wilde suggests Starks’ unavailability has “irritated” coach Mike McCarthy. The Packers had enough foresight to start Starks on the training camp PUP list, so he can avoid injured reserve. Quinn Porter (ankle) and Kregg Lumpkin (hamstring) are battling for the third running back spot.
  • LA Running Back #35
Packers RB Quinn Porter is expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks with a sprained MCL.
Porter is seeking a second opinion, but the initial diagnosis suggests his roster spot is in peril. With rookie James Starks (hamstring) still without a timetable for a return, Kregg Lumpkin is now the heavy favorite for the No. 3 tailback job.
