Cardinals signed punter Scott Player to an extension through the 2007 season.
He’s spent his entire seven-year career with the team. Player averaged 43.1 yards per kick on the season.
  • Browns released P Scott Player and claimed DT Louis Leonard off waivers from the Rams.
Player’s facial hair and helmet combination should have earned a multi-year contract. We’ll miss him, but Dave Zastudil will take over punting duties. Leonard, a big body from Fresno State, will work behind starter Ethan Kelley and Ted Washington at nose tackle.
  • Browns signed P Scott Player.
Player had been cut by the Cardinals, and his stay with the Browns should only last until P Dave Zastudil can return from a strained oblique. P Paul Ernster, who had been filling in for Zastudil, was released.
  • Cardinals released P Scott Player.
Waiver claim Mike Barr will take over for the nine-year veteran. It’s a surprise because Player is coming off a career-best yards-per-punt average, although his net was down a year ago. Barr is also considerably cheaper.
  • Patriots P Scott Player will not be able to wear his one-bar facemask any longer because a new NFL rule prohibits it.
Player, who is battling Chris Hanson to start, was the last remaining player to have the one bar on his helmet. The one bar was legal when Player, 38, entered the league. Gary Anderson and Matt Bahr used to wear it as well.
  • Patriots agreed to terms with P Scott Player, formerly of the Browns.
Player was on Cleveland’s roster for about three weeks last season. The 38-year-old will compete with Chris Hanson in training camp to start.
  • The Patriots have been talking to free agent punter Scott Player.
Figures that Bill Belichick, a student of football history, would go after the only guy left with a single facebar. Player would compete with Chris Hanson if he signs. The Pats also talked to Mitch Berger.
  • Patriots released P Scott Player.
It was revealed over the weekend that Player would no longer be able to wear his helmet with just one bar on the facemask, and perhaps that zapped him of his kicking powers. The 38-year-old could be reaching the end of the line.
