  • FA Defensive Back #21
Don Carey and Scott Starks are the leading contenders for the Jaguars’ nickel back job, according Vic Ketchman of the team’s official site.
Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox form an up-and-coming starting corner duo, but the depth in the secondary has to be a major concern. Starks is always hurt and Carey is a project out of Norfolk State.
  • FA Defensive Back #21
2009 sixth-round pick Don Carey ran with the Jaguars’ first-team defense in place of disgruntled CB Rashean Mathis at Monday’s OTA.
Carey, whom the Jaguars stole off waivers from the Browns last summer, spent his first year on injured reserve. Assuming Mathis regains his starting spot by Week 1, Carey looks to have an inside track on the nickel back job.

Jaguars signed cornerback Scott Starks, a third-round pick, to a four-year contract.
The Wisconsin product will contend for the vacant starting position in Jacksonville this season. He received a signing bonus of $500,000.
  • CLE Defensive Back
Nickel back Terry Cousin is not expected back with the Jaguars in 2008.
Cousin, 33 in April, is an unrestricted free agent. Scott Starks offers more upside and youth behind starting CBs Brian Williams and Rashean Mathis.

Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis (groin strain) is not expected to play Sunday.
Lee Evans should be the biggest beneficiary of Jacksonville heading to Sunday without its top cornerback. Little used dime corner Scott Starks is expected to start in Mathis’ place, with Terry Cousin staying in the nickel.
  • JAC Defensive Back
Jaguars CB Scott Starks suffered a groin injury in Sunday’s game.
The team called him questionable to return. Starks is usually the Jags’ nickel back, coming on for three-receiver sets. He’s long been injury prone.
