Browns signed seventh-round WR Syndric Steptoe to a four-year contract.
The smallish Steptoe has good instincts as a returner and produced at Arizona but will likely struggle to outrun NFL coverage units without great speed. He’s not a lock to make the Browns’ roster out of training camp.

Josh Cribbs is the favorite to be Cleveland’s punt returner this season.
Not good news for seventh-rounder Syndric Steptoe. Cribbs, who’s mostly returned kicks the last two seasons, will be the team’s fourth or fifth receiver.
  • HOU Tight End
Browns released TE Ryan Krause, OL Andrew Hoffman, OL Cliff Louis, WR Maurice Mann, OL Fred Matua, DB DeMario Minter, DL Babatunde Oshinowo, DL Chase Pittman, OL Brent Pousson, DL Melila Purcell, WR Steve Sanders, LB Clifton Smith, OL Rob Smith, WR Syndric Steptoe, DB Justin Hamilton, DB Jeremy LeSueur, DL J’Vonne Parker and LB Jason Short. They also placed LB Mason Unck on IR.
Krause lost out on the third TE spot to Darnell Dinkins. Minter showed promise as a rookie, but seems to have never fully recovered from a knee injury last season. Pittman, Steptoe and Purcell could end up on the practice squad.

The Akron Beacon-Journal believes that rookie wideouts Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi lead the way among Cleveland’s wideouts competing for snaps after OTAs.
A good sign for the team’s future. The two rookies are battling with David Patten, Mike Furrey, Joshua Cribbs, Syndric Steptoe, Paul Hubbard and Lance Leggett to play behind Braylon Edwards. It’s an especially good sign for Massaquoi, a second-round pick like Robiskie who many thought was raw coming out of Georgia.

    Browns waived/injured WR Syndric Stepoe.
Steptoe, 24, is out for the year after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. He might come back to Cleveland as a camp body in 2010.

Browns backup WR Syndric Steptoe is out for the season with a torn labrum in his shoulder.
Steptoe probably was going to have a tough time making the team anyway after the Browns spent two high picks on receivers.
  • CLE Wide Receiver
Browns WR Syndric Steptoe was carted off the practice field with an arm/shoulder injury Saturday.
Per Mangini policy, the Browns are offering no details on the injury. With the team finally upgrading their receiver depth this offseason, Steptoe is a long-shot to make the final roster.
  • CLE Wide Receiver
Coach Eric Mangini denied a player rep’s accusation that WR Syndric Steptoe was injured because the Browns practiced in a driving rain Saturday.
“Seventy-nine other guys were able to practice effectively, and really the play that he was injured on didn’t have anything to do with the elements,” Mangini said. The ill communicator has come under fire for over-working his players, and Peter King pointed out that Browns camp was the only one he’s seen without a “positive vibe” this summer.

Donte’ Stallworth is inactive for Week 3 against the Ravens.
Stallworth missed practice all week. Syndric Steptoe will start in his place, but guys like Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards will be the biggest beneficiaries of some extra targets.

Browns KR Josh Cribbs suffered a high ankle sprain against the Giants on Monday and could be sidelined until opening day.
Tuesday’s MRI revealed no broken bones, but it’s still a significant injury and one that can linger. Syndric Steptoe will Cribbs’ place on punt and kickoff returns for the final two preseason games. Losing Cribbs for any regular season time could be crushing to Cleveland, as he possesses rare multi-faceted special teams ability and can operate from the slot.
