NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said the “most likely” outcome of T.J. Watt’s contract dispute is that the two sides agree to an extension that resets the market before the season opener.
Pelissero recently reported that the Steelers do not plan to trade Watt, and Watt’s record-setting goals are well known, so the most recent report makes sense. The team will do its best to ensure team-friendly outs exist later in the deal, but for now, Watt appears to be on track for a hefty payday sometime before September 7. Pelissero states succinctly, Watt’s expected extension “is going to be north of Myles Garrett—it is going to be upwards of $40 million per year.”

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac believes T.J. Watt wants to be the highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
“This isn’t going to be as easy as the last contract with T.J., where he was in his prime ... they saw a little bit of a decline last year,” Dulac believes. Ja’Marr Chase currently holds the record in average per year at $40.25 million for a non-quarterback, though Myles Garrett’s $88.8 million in guarantees dwarfs it. It’s unclear which dollar figure Watt is coming after, but what is clear is that this could drag on well into training camp and perhaps, as Dulac suggests, right up to the beginning of the regular season. With Trey Hendrickson and Micah Parsons also vying to be in the highest-paid non-quarterback space, we have plenty of contract drama ahead of us on the edge during training camp and the preseason.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the Steelers “have no intention” of trading star pass rusher T.J. Watt.
According to Pelissero, the team’s focus remains on extending Watt’s deal, which is set to expire at the end of this season. The veteran pass rusher has been working toward a new deal all offseason, and skipped mandatory minicamp while awaiting a new deal. Watt’s situation recently came back into the light when it was announced the Steelers would be giving Jalen Ramsey a $1.5 million raise in 2025 after acquiring him from the Dolphins, but it sounds like the hope is Watt and the Steelers will eventually figure things out.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he will not speculate as to whether EDGE T.J. Watt will attend training camp, but he “believes both sides want to get this deal done.”
Batko adds that the two sides have been in communication throughout Watt’s minicamp absence. It is in both parties’ interest to get a new deal done, but Watt’s firm stance is likely a tad unsettling for Steelers fans. The stalwart EDGE is understandably dead set on being paid handsomely. Players are scheduled to report for Steelers training camp on July 23.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt is not attending the team’s minicamp.
Watt is not budging from his demands for a new deal going into the 2025 season. The Steelers reportedly expect to have Watt for Week 1, though the contract issue could drag well into the summer. Steelers beat writer Brian Batko said Tuesday that Watt and the team “agreeing to an extension is still the most likely outcome to me, but what makes this different than his last contract year is that he did go to minicamp back in 2021.” Not reporting this week would be a new leverage move for Watt, entering his age-31 season. Watt has 30.5 sacks and 38 tackles for loss over his past two seasons, each of which saw him play 17 games.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac reports the Steelers have “the expectation” they will agree on a new contract before the start of the regular season.
Watt’s contract extension talks have been slow going thus far, with cryptic Instagram messages and beat writers believing the sides started far apart on the numbers. Dulac believes Myles Garrett’s contract upped Watt’s demand. It sounds like this is a situation that could bleed into training camp at this point, perhaps one that would create a “hold in” for Watt. But it’s unsurprising that the Steelers want to reward one of the best pass rushers in their history and it would be surprising if he’s not ready for Week 1.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports EDGE T.J. Watt is currently negotiating a new contract with the Steelers.
Taking a page out of the wide receiver playbook, Watt dropped a cryptic post on his Instagram Thursday morning of him flashing a peace sign. As Rapoport noted, it doesn’t sound like the contract talks are going the way Watt wanted. Watt is about to enter the final year of his four-year, $112 million contract. The Steelers’ front office has already said publicly that they want to get a deal done with their star pass-rusher this offseason. Watt totaled 11.5 sacks and forced six fumbles last season. Even if the hard ball continues, the two sides should be able to reach an agreement before the start of the 2025 season.

Steelers GM Omar Khan said the team wants to extend T.J. Watt “at some point this offseason.”
Khan praised Watt and compared him to Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu in the category of lifetime Steelers. With Watt currently on a $30.4 million cap hit for 2025, it would make sense for the Steelers to get him extended ahead of free agency. The star edge player had 11.5 sacks and was a second-team All-Pro this past season, though his impact was diminished down the stretch as he played through an ankle injury.

Steelers owner Art Rooney said “That’s something we want to look at this offseason” when asked about T.J. Watt entering the final year of his contract.
Rooney added that the team hopes they “can have (Watt) for the future, beyond this year.” That sounds about right. One of the most decorated pass rushers in the league, Watt has amassed 108 sacks during the first eight years of his career and racked up 11.5 sacks along with 19 TFLs this season while earning Second-Team All-Pro honors. He will be 30 at the start of next season and should still have plenty of high-end years to offer the Steelers. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if the two sides re-upped under another lucrative deal before the start of next season.

T.J. Watt (ankle) was removed from the Steelers’ injury report and will play in Week 16 against the Ravens.
Things were trending in this direction after Watt was seen practicing earlier in the week. The Steelers will have their star pass rusher available to them in Saturday’s AFC North battle against the Ravens despite suffering his ankle injury less than a week ago. Watt has totaled 54 tackles and 11.5 sacks this season and has totaled four sacks in his last three games. While Watt will be active, cornerback Donte Jackson (back) is officially questionable after logging a limited practice on Friday.
