A plus for Denver’s ground game. Assuming Nalen still has something left, the five-time Pro Bowler should bolster the zone blocking scheme, possibly allowing one back to get the “hot hand” and take over as a primary runner.

The team is not thinking about placing Nalen on injured reserve, but the news is discouraging. The passing offense is obviously doing just fine with Casey Wiegmann filling in; the ground game hasn’t been so great.

An MRI revealed no structural damage to Broncos C Tom Nalen’s knee, coach Mike Shanahan confirmed.

“Tom is such a tough guy, so when he feels like he’s ready to go, he’ll go,” Shanahan said. “When will that be? I really don’t know.” Casey Weigmann is filling in with the first time. Nalen should be back by Week 1.

Nalen’s left knee didn’t respond to a June arthroscopy and he’s having it “cleaned up” again. He will be out indefinitely. Nalen is 37 and a poor bet to play more than a few games this season. This could hurt Denver’s run game.
