Eugene, Oregon, to host 2028 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials

Eugene, Oregon, will host the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials for a sixth consecutive time in 2028.

The meet at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon will be June 17-22, ahead of the first Summer Olympics to be held in the U.S. since 1996 in Los Angeles, which open July 14, 2028.

Track and field competition at the Olympics at the LA Memorial Coliseum begins the day after the Opening Ceremony.

Track and field and swimming switched places on the Olympic schedule for 2028, with swimming moving from the first week to the second week since its venue (SoFi Stadium, which will be known as 2028 Stadium during the Games) will also co-host the Opening Ceremony.

Traditionally at trials, the top three finishers in most events qualify for the Olympic team.

Trials competition for the 10,000m, decathlon and heptathlon will be held earlier in the spring “to allow additional recovery time before the Games.”

Eugene previously hosted track and field trials in 1972, 1976, 1980, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2021 and 2024.

Recent trials were eight days long — with two off days in the middle.

The switch to six days “follows consultation with athletes who expressed interest in a more efficient selection process, particularly with the Trials taking place less than a month before the Olympic Games,” according to USA Track and Field.

Hayward Field also hosted the World Championships in 2022, the World U20 Championships earlier this month and will again host the USA Track and Field Outdoor and Para National Championships in 2027.
