IOC sets process, timeline for 2036 Games host selection

The host for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics — the next Games yet to be awarded — will be chosen in mid-2029 with the IOC returning to choosing a Summer Games host seven years out.

In mid-2029, the IOC Executive Board will select “preferred hosts” for 2036 to go up for election at an IOC session.

The next two Summer Games will be in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.

LA received the 2028 Games in 2017 — when Paris was also named the 2024 host. Brisbane was named 2032 host in 2021.

Under recent host bidding reforms, the IOC can enter targeted dialogue with what it deems a “preferred host” candidate rather than holding a bid race with multiple candidates all the way through a final IOC members vote, which it traditionally held seven years before each Games.

Starting with 2036, there will be increased collaboration between the IOC and potential hosts at an earlier stage with more involvement from IOC members.

The next steps in the 2036 host selection process include the IOC board shortlisting interested parties from a continuous dialogue pool to enter a new phase of strategic dialogue next March.

In late 2028, the IOC board will start targeted dialogue with preferred hosts based on a future host commission report.

Candidates for 2036 are believed to still include Qatar, which announced its Doha bid last July, and India, which sent a letter of intent to the IOC in October 2024.

Kirsty Coventry’s reassurance to the annual meeting of Summer Games sports bodies came after she warned in February of “uncomfortable” talks ahead to make future Olympic hosting more efficient.
