Jared Goldberg makes first Alpine skiing World Cup podium in 168th start

American Jared Goldberg finished one hundredth of a second behind Italian winner Mattia Casse to make his first Alpine skiing World Cup podium in his 168th career start on Friday.

Goldberg, 33 and a two-time Olympian, was runner-up in a super-G in Val Gardena, Italy. Casse, 34, earned his first World Cup victory on home snow.

“I’m fired up,” Goldberg told Swiss broadcaster SRF. “I skied how I wanted to. Everything felt so good.”

Then on Saturday, Olympic super-G silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle placed third in a downhill in Val Gardena. It marked the first time U.S. men made Alpine World Cup podiums in back-to-back races since 2015 (Ted Ligety, Travis Ganong).

ALPINE SKIING: Broadcast Schedule

Goldberg became the oldest American Alpine skier to make their first World Cup podium. His best previous finish was fourth in January 2023 at the famed Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel, Austria.

He debuted on the World Cup in November 2012 and raced at the Olympics in 2014 and 2018 with a best finish of 11th in the combined in Sochi. He has traveled around the world with a guitar since age 16.

Cochran-Siegle, 32, earned his third career World Cup podium and his first since 2020, when he won a super-G in Bormio, Italy.

The U.S. men have had more success at Val Gardena than any other World Cup stop over the last decade. That also included downhill victories from Bryce Bennett in 2021 and 2023.

“The key to Gardena is that it is flat with a lot of steep to flats and very close to freeskiing,” Goldberg said, according to U.S. Ski and Snowboard. “I grew up freeskiing in Utah at Snowbird, and I think that background helps here.”
