It appears South Korea won’t be sharing the 2018 Winter Olympics with its neighbor to the north.
Chang Ung, an International Olympic Committee member from North Korea, told Voice of America on Tuesday that North Korea’s Masik ski resort could hold 2018 Olympic skiing events if an agreement could be reached, according to Reuters.
The Pyeongchang 2018 organizing committee didn’t seem optimistic in a statement Wednesday.
“Co-hosting goes against International Olympic Committee regulations which stipulate that, unlike the World Cup, all the Olympic events be held within the host city,” the organizing committee said. “We should make sure technology and administrative works are in optimal condition in order to host an event- and athlete-oriented Olympic Games. Holding some of the events in the Masik resort, more than 300 kilometres away from Pyeongchang, cannot guarantee meeting this goal.”
The current Olympic Charter does not consider venues in multiple countries, outgoing IOC president Jacques Rogge has said. North and South Korea marched together at the opening ceremony at recent Olympics.
