Raiders waived or released TE Richard Gordon, S Reggie Smith, DL Ryan Baker, LB Billy Boyko, CB Chance Casey, RB Deonte Williams, OG Jason Foster, WR Greg Jenkins, TE Brian Leonhardt, OG Lamar Mady, K Justin Medlock, S Shelton Johnson, and DT Kurt Taufa’asau.
Who? Gordon was in the mix for the starting tight end job, but that was only because the Raiders have so little talent. After trimming the roster to 53, the Raiders have decided to keep four quarterbacks and two punters. Good luck.
  • FA Tight End #89
According to the Contra Costa Times, “there’s work to be done” before the Raiders can feel confident about David Ausberry at the tight end position.
Ausberry is working with the first-team offense at OTAs, but is likely to be spelled as a run blocker and in pass protection. The Raiders project as a conservative, run-balanced offense under new OC Greg Knapp, with limited tight end production. Brandon Myers and FB/TE Richard Gordon figure to be used in a platoon with Ausberry, as role-specific players with starting experience.
  • FA Tight End #89
The Contra Costa Times expects David Ausberry to have the best receiving stats of all Raiders tight ends this year.
Ausberry says he’s up to 265 pounds, 20 over his listed weight. Although coach Dennis Allen believes Ausberry has the potential to be an every-down tight end, his 2012 fantasy ceiling is limited by an expected platoon with Brandon Myers and Richard Gordon, to go with new OC Greg Knapp’s run-heavy approach.
  • FA Tight End
Raiders backup FB/TE Richard Gordon suffered a broken hand against the Patriots in Week 4.
Gordon played through the injury with Marcel Reece out last week, but he’s not practicing this week. Reece remains sidelined as well, so the Raiders are reviewing their options. Michael Bush could move to a lead-blocking role, or Manase Tonga could be activated from the practice squad.
  • FA Tight End #89
The San Francisco Chronicle says the Raiders don’t view TEs David Ausberry and Richard Gordon as starting-caliber players.
Oakland is set to lose Brandon Myers in free agency, and they’re going to need a replacement. Ausberry and Gordon aren’t those guys. The Chronicle says free agents Anthony Fasano and Kevin Boss “might want to keep their cell line open.”
  • FA Tight End #89
CSN Bay Area believes David Ausberry will get the first crack at the Raiders’ tight end job.
Ausberry and Richard Gordon are the longest-tenured tight ends on the roster, so they’ll get the first looks based on experience. But rookies Nick Kasa and Mychal Rivera will both be given fair shots to win the gig. The four players have combined for ten career receptions in the NFL.
  • FA Tight End
Raiders selected Miami TE Richard Gordon with the No. 181 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
Gordon possesses great size at 6-foot-3, 267 pounds, but was known as an under-achiever at Miami. He has decent speed and is a capable blocker, but his ceiling is probably that of a third tight end.
  • FA Tight End
Raiders agreed to terms with sixth-round TE Richard Gordon on a four-year deal.
Gordon will fall in line behind Zach Miller (once he’s re-signed) and Brandon Myers. There’s not much upside here despite Gordon’s 6'3/267 frame.
  • FA Tight End #82
Brandon Myers is expected to be the Raiders’ starting tight end this season.
The team’s strongest blocking tight end, Myers started seven games last season as a fill-in for an injured Kevin Boss. Despite David Ausberry’s impressive offseason, the Raiders are likely to use a three-man rotation at the position. Look elsewhere for fantasy value at tight end.
  • FA Tight End
Raiders OC Greg Olson says the team is trying to decide between Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud to be its starting tight end.
Giggle. With David Ausberry (shoulder) out indefinitely, the Raiders will resort to starting a player who likely wouldn’t make 31 other rosters. “Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud, they’re in the battle for the No. 1 spot,” said Olson. “We like the emergence of our young tight ends (Mychal Rivera, Nick Kasa), but we’ll really take a good hard look at Richard Gordon and Jeron Mastrud this week.”
