The 36-year-old southpaw was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday, but rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville, Detwiler will peddle his wares on the open market. He holds a 4.44 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 28/10 K/BB ratio over 26 1/3 innings at the big league level this season.

This comes after Detwiler surrendered the 694th home run of Albert Pujols’ career in Monday night’s blowout loss to the Cardinals. He is the 450th different pitcher that Pujols has homered against, a new MLB record.

Detwiler’s only previous save came with the Nationals in 2014, his first year as a reliever. He has a 3.50 ERA in18 innings for the Reds.

Detwiler has been out the last three weeks with a back injury. He’ll return to middle relief.

Detwiler has been out since early July due to lower back pain. There isn’t a definitive timetable for his return, but the veteran left-hander appears likely to be ready to go following the All-Star break.

Detwiler has recorded a pedestrian 4.20 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 16/6 K/BB ratio across 15 innings (18 appearances) this season. It’s unclear how long the 36-year-old veteran journeyman will be sidelined at the moment.

Detwiler inked a minor league contract with the Reds back in April and gets the call back to the majors to give Cincinnati a lefty reliever in their bullpen. The 36-year-old veteran southpaw has made 277 career appearances in the majors since 2007.

Detwiler posted a respectable 4.64 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 62/20 K/BB ratio across 52 1/3 innings (53 appearances, five starts) last year between the Marlins and Padres. The 36-year-old veteran lefty has made 277 career appearances in the majors since 2007. He’ll serve as organizational pitching depth for the Reds this season.
