Bucs GM Bruce Allen recently spoke with free agent Donovin Darius.
Tampa Bay is trying to increase competition at every position but is in pretty good shape with promising rookie Sabby Piscitelli pushing Jermaine Phillips at strong safety. Oakland and Carolina seem more likely landing spots.
  • FA Defensive Back
The Bucs are convinced that Sabby Piscitelli is best suited as a No. 3 safety -- not a starter.
All it took was one year of blown coverage assignments, missed tackles, and no big plays for this to become obvious. Piscitelli has surrendered his first-team status to Sean Jones. Jones will be a big upgrade in run defense.

Safeties Will Allen and Jermaine Phillips were reportedly among the best players at Bucs training camp.
They had to be, and will continue to have to be during the season to hold off rookies Tanard Jackson and Sabby Piscitelli. Allen was especially disappointing in 2006, but will be starting at free safety to begin the season.
  • FA Defensive Back
Bucs placed S Sabby Piscitelli on injured reserve with a fractured foot, ending his season, and signed WR Chad Lucas from the practice squad.
Piscitelli, a second-round pick, couldn’t overtake Jermaine Phillips for the starting strong safety job in camp and was only playing special teams in his three games active. Lucas won’t make a big impact on offense.

Bucs signed second-round safety Sabby Piscitelli to a four-year contract.
The Oregon State grad starts training camp out behind strong safety Jermaine Phillips, but could push for a starting spot with a strong training camp.
  • TB Defensive Back
Safety Jermaine Phillips remains at the top of the depth chart in Tampa.
Sabby Piscitelli hasn’t made much obvious headway in the competition. He’ll need to be watched closely during the season in IDP leagues, however, as Piscitelli figures to make a run at Phillips if his tackling remains suspect.
  • FA Defensive Back
Bucs rookie SS Sabby Piscitelli suffered a right foot injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against St. Louis.
The second-round pick went to the locker room to be X-rayed just as the first quarter came to a close. Piscitelli’s status is uncertain currently.
  • FA Defensive Back
Bucs SS Sabby Piscitelli suffered a fractured foot in the team’s Week 3 win.
The second-round pick was injured while playing special teams and will be lost for the season. Starter Jermaine Phillips, who is already playing at a very high level, will have no competition for snaps going forward.
  • FA Defensive Back
Bucs SS Sabby Piscitelli (foot) was on crutches in the locker room following Sunday’s win over St. Louis.
“I heard three pops,” Piscitelli said. “I don’t know what is wrong.” It sounds like the rookie second-round pick may have a serious injury. His status should be updated by Wednesday at the latest.
  • TB Defensive Back
Jermaine Phillips says he still has a “long, long way to go” in his transition from strong safety to weakside linebacker.
If the transition takes, Sabby Piscitelli will move into the starting lineup at strong safety. There remains a decent chance that the Bucs will ditch the experiment and send Phillips back to his natural position.
