Carrick’s given his thoughts on the lone goal of the game.

“Not even confused. We put things in place in the game now to help referees, how many screens, how many people. It’s more worrying if that’s the interpretation of the game of football. If that’s the definition of not interfering with play, with our defender next to him within an inch of the ball, it’s a staggering decision. I couldn’t understand it once I’ve seen it and the explanation makes it even worse. Incredible.”

Here’s more from Carrick on the ‘staggering’ decision and United’s inability to take advantage of City having 10 men.

“What I can’t understand is the rules. I went to him because he was free, That’s why Haaland was free at the back.”

“I think there was a flick because I don’t normally go in onside. I told Oliver that I took it a bit personal that he thought I was offside. Enzo Maresca gave me a thumbs so I prepared to celebrate.”

Do you need to stay calm after this loss? “Calm response, yeah, but we’ve got to react anyway. We feel like we’ve not won two games in a row yet so we need a bit of momentum and consistency in our teams and our results?”

Here’s what PGMOL sent out regarding Haaland’s goal, where Fernandez was offside and tried to head Gvardiol’s cross.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded. The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn’t play the ball.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma makes a tremendous point-blank save on Bryan Mbeumo at the death to preserve the win.

After Phil Foden’s red card in the 23rd minute United have really struggled and it has been so easy for City to get back in their shape and defend, then launch counters.

That’s nine goals to go with three assists in 11 Manchester derbies for Haaland.

He has no goals and no assists in three non-Premier League meetings with United, so do that math! A United crusher.

This was very close to 2-0, as Enzo Fernandez gets the ball atop the 18 and aims for goal.

From every angle we’ve seen here in the press box it looked like Erling Haaland was offside when Josko Gvardiol’s cross came in.

Maybe we aren’t seeing the right angle on the replays? The latest graphic now says Dorgu was keeping Haaland onside, but it still didn’t seem right!?

Fernandez did not touch the ball and Haaland was onside.

Now that it’s a goal, it can be described as a very, very good one.

This was some rush.

Donnarumma’s long ball is flicked into no man’s land, but Iliman Ndiate tracks it down to start a rush.

Antoine Semenyo took the ball on the left and it ends up swept toward the back post where Erling Haaland puts it home from a tough angle.

The flag is up. Enzo Fernandez is offside for sure. Haaland might not be. And Fernandez also tried to reach the ball, so did that interfere with the keeper?

This seems unlikely to be overturned but the VAR review is long.

Kobbie Mainoo’s curler from outside the box beat the huge outstretched arms of Gianluigi Donnarumma and most home fans were already celebrating.

But the ball pinged the post and was lucky to not hit Donnarumma on the back and then go in.

So close from Mainoo and United’s fans are creating a lot of noise and are getting right behind their team at the start of the second half.

Really positive first few minutes of the second half for United.

Man City are down to 10 men but still have 52% possession as Manchester United have failed to truly impress themselves on their derby visitors.

Shots are 5-2 to the hosts, who have an xG edge of 0.16-0.09.

That’s not a lot of xG. Danger please, gents!

Marcus Rashford has a dangerous free kick, maybe 10 yards outside the City 18.

Rashford beats the wall but sees his shot crash into the post and clatter out. United send a cross back into the mix but Gianluigi Donnarumma claims it.

There are a lot of moans and groans from the home fans at Old Trafford.

Since City were reduced to 10 players they’ve had the better chances.

United have had plenty of the ball on their own halfway line and in midfield but they’ve moving it too slowly and are struggling to open up gaps or create anything.

The closest they’ve come was Marcus Rashford hitting the post with a curling free kick. But Donnarumma probably had it covered.

Michael Carrick won’t be happy with this. City have managed to take the sting out of the game after that red card to Foden.

It will be really intriguing to see what Carrick does at half time but maybe bringing on Benjamin Sesko up top and going more direct and bypassing midfield is the way to go?

Wow, the noise inside here when the red card came out for Phil Foden was so loud.

Foden clearly kicked out at Bruno Fernandes but only after he had been fouled and then Fernandes had a little nibble at him while he was on the floor.

Fernandes made the most of the kick, but Foden simply can’t react that way.

Once referee Michael Oliver had sent Foden off there was no way VAR was going to overturn it. The red midst descended on Foden.

Some observations from here at Old Trafford: Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez ran at least 45 yards together to remonstrate to the referee and have a pop at Foden.

Fernandes is now being booed by the Man City fans every time he gets on the ball and being called something which rhymes with anchor.

Spicy. United are now up a player for over an hour and City have already retreated into a 4-4-1 formation.

Also, after so many red cards for his Chelsea teams over the last few years, Enzo Maresca must be wondering if he’s firing up his players too much, or if he’s just been unlucky.

Fernandes had kicked Foden in the back and then kicked the ball while getting a piec eof the England star.

Foden then put his boot into Fernandes’ mid-section. Both should be off. But Fernandes has dodged discipline.

Josko Gvardiol and Marc Guehi have stomped out a couple of promising Man United attacks as the Red Devils have certainly found their way.

Manchester City are on top in terms of possession but Manchester United are opening up gaps on the break.

Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha have both charged away with the formere fouled and the latter dragging a shot wide.

Bryan Mbeumo is making clever runs and both Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu are getting forward well from full back.

United’s energy is impressive early on, but how long can they keep this up?

Diogo Dalot threw the first derby challenge within moments of kickoff, flooring Rayan Cherki.

City settled into control aside from a counter attack, but United go the other way in the 9th minute and Dalot zips behind the back line to meet a big cross, popping his header out of play.

As is the tradition, “Country Roads” is belted out at Old Trafford before kick off and the home fans are absolutely going for it.

My ears actually hurt from that. In a good way. It’s so loud.

United’s fans are fully behind their team and have created a special atmosphere.

Now, are United’s players on the pitch going to step up and put their indifferent start to the season aside.

Manchester United’s fans are in great voice as they sing Bruno’s name loud and proud and give local lad Kobbie Mainoo a huge cheer when his name is read out over the PA system. He’s going to need a big game today to stop City’s midfield dominating.

United’s fans are going for it at the Stretford End already and are welcomed to Old Trafford by the stadium announcer who calls is “the home of the greatest football club in the world.”

Meanwhile in the away end Man City’s fans are making quite the racket too. ‘the city is ours’ and ‘we’re not really here’ they sing as plenty of hand gestures are being made towards the United fans. Not friendly ones.

Buoyed by four wins in a row in all competitions, City are looking to set the tone for this rivalry this season and let United know that just because Pep Guardiola is gone, the ‘Noisy Neighbors’ aren’t going anywhere.

Some games just feel different. This is one of them. The intense is fantastic. You can hear the excited chatter swirling all around Old Trafford. It is Manchester Derby time.

Usually the above question is one dripping with desperation, where two managers en route to different destinations may truly require a win to keep them on track.

This time, it’s not a make or break moment. Maresca is a new boss with new buys still adjusting to the side and is 3-0-0 anyway with a win over Porto in the Champions League at midweek to boot.

United’s ownership, meanwhile, have invested in Carrick and need this hire to work out. Carrick can lose this game and still point to his debut win in the derby — his first game in the United dugout.

As long as both teams put out decent performances at Old Trafford, but bosses can shrug off the result (as much as someone can shrug off a Manchester derby loss).

Carrick certainly could use this win more, though. Being able to hang his hat on derby dominance is a signpost on a trail that is yet to include a trophy.

Michael Carrick has named his Man United starting lineup and the big news is that Luke Shaw isn’t fit.

Shaw isn’t even on the bench as Patrick Dorgu starts at left back.

Benjamin Sesko is on the bench as he continues to build up his fitness.

Other than that, the lineup is as expected as Marcus Rashford starts on the left in a big day for the Mancunian.

Bruno Fernandes supports Matheus Cunha, while Bryan Mbeumo starts on the right and local lad Kobbie Mainoo will look to control midfield and continue his superb start to the season.

United’s bench is looking pretty strong with Mount, Zirkzee, Sesko, Heaven, Mazraoui, Yoro, Andrey Santos, and youngster Shea Lacey all great options to call on.

I don’t get to say that often, so please let me indulge in this and bask in the sunshine!

Okay, we have a game to play, and not just any old game. It is the 199th Manchester Derby!

Manchester United have four points on the board from three league games so far this season. Man City have nine points from a possible nine.

Both teams were in Champions League action in midweek, with a 2-0 win for City at Porto on Tuesday and United beat Sabah 4-0 at home on Thursday.

But we all know form goes out of the window in derby games, especially this one. United have often upset City in recent years and it feels like today is a big game for the Red Devils.

With Pep Guardiola leaving City over the summer after 10 trophy-laden years and Enzo Maresca replacing him, is this when United finish above City in the league for the first time in over 13 years?

Old Trafford is going to be bouncing.

This is a big question posed by our Joe Prince-Wright, who has a knack for feeling these things before they happen.

There are some intriguing decisions being made by Michael Carrick and Enzo Maresca this week after both sides competed in the UEFA Champions League at midweek.

Might Carrick choose Benjamin Sesko up top to give a sizable challenge to Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi, or will he opts for a more usual group of attackers to start the game?

For City, it’s all about the choices in the midfield and wingers, and it will be until players have laid claim to their spots following the exits of Rodri and Bernardo Silva this summer. Enzo Fernandez, Antoine Semenyo, and Erling Haaland seem certainities and perhaps Rayan Cherki is closing on a similar status?
