Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone believes it’s time for his cross-town rivals Real Madrid to find a replacement for iconic goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
In recent years, the Real Madrid shot stopper has been at different times both brilliant and infuriating, and according to Simeone during a season-ending television interview on Onda Cero, Casillas’s time in net for Los Blancos should come to an end.
“Sometimes we can spend too long in the same place, like Casillas. Sometimes it’s best to move on,” Simeone said to Onda Cero.
Casillas has been a polarizing figure of late. Having played for Real Madrid his entire 15-year career, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has given those who agree with Simeone plenty of ammunition, but has also shown flashes of brilliance to give his biggest fans reason to believe his best is not completely gone yet. Often, those two sentiments have juxtaposed themselves together in the same match.

Real Madrid is heavily rumored to be exploring a purchase of David de Gea from Manchester United, a move that would likely signal the end of Casillas’s reign at the Bernabeu. However, his contract runs through the summer of 2017, so he would likely stay on at Real for at least another year no matter what happens this summer.
