Jermaine Jones has impressed in the United States’ first three World Cup matches. The midfielder is also set to see his contract with Schalke expire on July 1. So it’s no surprise that there are rumors swirling about regarding Jones’ potential next destination.

Could it be Major League Soccer? Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes has hinted that just might be the case. Speaking after his team’s 1-0 win over Portland on Friday night, Vermes denied having spoken to Jones, but said:

I know the league is talking to him, and we’re kind of in the mix like any other team, but right now it’s not 100 percent. It’s somebody that we would keep on our radar, but it’s not a decision that we’ve said ‘hey, this is the guy we want. You also have to consider the allocation ranking. Toronto has it right now, so anybody that comes back as a national team player, they have the first rights unless they want to trade that away.

Jones, born in Frankfurt, has spent nearly the entirety of his career in Germany. He spent half a season on loan with Blackburn Rovers, in the Premier League at the time, and closed out last season with a half-year spell at Turkish side Beşiktaş. The 32-year-old played with the Germany U21 team, but could not break into the senior side. He subsequently declared himself available to the U.S., and made his debut in October 2010.

With the way he’s flourished at this year’s World Cup, playing alongside Kyle Beckerman in Jürgen Klinsmann’s double pivot, it’s no surprise MLS teams are pursuing Jones. And, since Jones himself declared interest last winter, but couldn’t find any takers at the time, it’s highly likely that this move will pan out. The only question is, where will he land?
