VIDEO: Louis van Gaal said the better team lost today

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal had some pointed words for his counterparts today following the 1-0 loss at home to Southampton. Namely, that the better team lost.

RECAP: Get the scoop on Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Southampton

“We played a much better game than Southampton, and now they were lucky to score a goal out of nothing, and that’s very disappointing. We didn’t create so much, but we dominated the game, and they came for a draw I believe, and they go away with a victory, and that’s disappointing.”

While Southampton manager Ronald Koeman won’t have entirely disagreed with van Gaal of his assessment of the game, those are strong words. Manchester United lost just its second game of the year at home today, and did so without a shot on target. Those chances van Gaal mentions are likely those that fell to Juan Mata in the closing stages of the game, which the Spaniard blasted both wide and over the bar.

Van Gaal also did admit that while his team “dominated the game” but they didn’t create enough opportunities in front of goal, and gave Southampton credit for being “organized well” to keep them out.
