48 seconds. That’s how long it took the usually composed Steven Gerrard to lose his cool against Manchester United and leave his team a man down for the entirety of the second half.

Less than a minute after coming on as a second half substitute, the Liverpool legend stamped hard on the leg of Ander Herrera, leaving Martin Atkinson no choice but to whip out the red card. Gerrard, as he has done all his career, took complete responsibility for the mistake following the match, saying he saw Herrera’s studs on the tackle and reacted accordingly.
“I just need to accept it,” Gerrard said. “The decision was the correct one, and I’ve let my teammates and my manager down, and even more importantly I’ve let the supporters down. So I take full responsibility for my actions.”
