Brighton’s Diego Gomez scores from the halfway line as Seagulls blitz rivals Palace

Diego Gomez has scored from just inside the halfway line — we’re talking a yard — as Brighton and Hove Albion fans at the Amex are getting a first half for the ages against the rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Seagulls led 1-0 through an own goal when Gomez caught Walter Benitez well off his line and fired an arrow into the upper reaches of the goal from 51 meters (about 56 yards).

Benitez was near the penalty spot and would not have been expected a shot with such pace and power, as this was far from a lofted prayer from Gomez.

Opta says it’s “the furthest range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney for Everton v West Ham in November 2017 (58m).”

Enjoy.
