New Orleans Football’s Nick Underhill reports that the battle between Saints QBs Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough is “something to monitor” after a strong showing from Rattler in organized team activities.
Underhill described Rattler as being in “total control of the offense” and looked “really, really good” while hitting “throws with a high degree of difficulty.” Now, as Underhill also points out, a second-year player “should look better” than Shough, who was participating in just “his fourth practice with an NFL team.” Underhill does not know whether “this is going to lead to wins, or results,” but declared the competition “rejuvenating” for a team in need of leadership. While neither Rattler nor Shough is likely to produce fantasy football QB1 results, the starter could work his way onto QB2 streaming radar, aided by the Saints’ talented receiving corps.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Saints QB Jake Haener suffered an oblique strain and is expected to miss “a couple of weeks.”
As Schefter notes, Haener was one of three quarterbacks vying for the starting gig in New Orleans. Haener was unlikely to overtake both Spencer Rattler and second-round rookie Tyler Shough on the depth chart and missing time in practice will put him even farther behind. Per Schefter, Haener is expected to miss the remainder of OTAs but should be back for training camp.

Saints HC Kellen Moore said the team will give its quarterbacks “a bunch of opportunities” before they consider adding a veteran.
All has been quiet on the quarterback front since the Saints lost Derek Carr to an abrupt retirement. Despite having one of the youngest quarterback rooms in the league, Moore doesn’t appear to be in any rush to sign a vet to help his group of signal-callers. While he did concede that there are times where “the opportunity presents itself” to add a quarterback who is an obvious good fit, Moore also noted that the team has “some good guys here that can certainly mentor each other” this season. Rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough feels like a near lock to win a training camp battle between second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler and third-year quarterback Jake Haener, but a vet could throw a wrench in those plans. Moore hasn’t fully ruled out the team signing a veteran quarterback, but he sounds more than prepared to get a full evaluation of what he has on his roster before making any decisions on another option.

Saints OC Kellen Moore said there will be an open competition at quarterback following Derek Carr’s retirement.
The Saints selected rookie Tyler Shough in the second round of this year’s draft and still have holdovers Jake Heaner and Spencer Rattler on the roster. Both Haener and Rattler received extended looks last season following Carr’s injury, so it would stand to reason that Shough will be given every chance to earn the starting gig under center for the Saints. That said, Moore mentioned today that “there’s a blank slate there,” indicating the team will be patient with their decision and let it play out through OTAs, camp, and the preseason. On if the team would consider adding a veteran quarterback, Moore stated, “we’ll certainly have awareness to it.” Stay tuned.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis confirmed the team will have a quarterback competition following the selection of Tyler Shough in the second round.
Loomis’ words came the same presser he later claimed Derek Carr (shoulder) remains the starter if healthy. If Carr is conveniently deemed unhealthy, that would leave only Shough and Spencer Rattler, which would be a fight rigged in Shough’s favor. His only real concern is the team and Carr patching up their differences, but that does not seem terribly likely at the moment. 25-year-old second-rounder Shough probably has better than 50 percent odds of being under center Week 1.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter writes that Derek Carr “probably will be the team’s QB1 entering 2025.”
Schefter’s read of the situation is that the Saints don’t want to pull the plug on the Carr contract because it would only save them a couple of million dollars. While that isn’t the entire truth — they could slap a post-June 1 tag on Carr’s release and save $30 million this year while spreading his cap hit to 2026 — it is notable that one of the most-sourced reporters in the industry doesn’t bring up that possibility. Carr would be an uninspiring low-end QB2 for the 2025 season should he remain in New Orleans, even under an actual offensive-minded coach like Kellen Moore.

Spencer Rattler completed 26-of-42 passes for 240 yards with a touchdown in the Saints’ 27-19, Week 18 loss to the Buccaneers.
Rattler was not expected to play in 2024, but with the injuries to Derek Carr, the fifth-round pick ended up playing in seven games while throwing for 1,317 yards and a 4/5 TD/INT ratio. The former Oklahoma and South Carolina quarterback showed some flashes, but he didn’t look like the long-term answer at quarterback, either. He’ll likely be a backup to Carr — assuming Carr is back, of course — and isn’t likely to be a fantasy-relevant quarterback next year.

Derek Carr (hand) was listed as a non-participant at practice again Thursday.
It’s looking plausible — maybe even likely — that Carr is going to miss another game to end a disastrous season for the Saints. If the 33-year-old veteran does miss that Week 18 game against the Buccaneers it’ll be Spencer Rattler getting another start.
  • NO Quarterback #4
Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi said the team will evaluate Derek Carr (hand) before the team’s Week 18 game against the Buccaneers.
According to Rizzi, Carr was held out of Week 17 after they determined he wasn’t far enough in his recovery to play when they ran simulated game situations. Carr suffered a nasty hand injury in the Saints Week 14 win over the Giants and has been sidelined ever since. While the team continues to treat his situation as one he could play through, there’s little reason for the team to put him on the field given their 5-11 record and the fact Week 18’s game is little more than a formality at this point. If he can’t start, Spencer Rattler would most likely get the nod in the season finale. Rattler threw for 218-1-2 against the Raiders and won’t be on the fantasy radar for anyone still playing out the final week.

Spencer Rattler completed 20-of-36 passes for 218 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Saints’ 25-10, Week 17 loss to the Raiders, adding 46 yards rushing on three carries.
Rattler was let down by his receivers on a few easy drops but also made a handful of bad throws and looked flustered in the pocket often. He did take shots down the field often, and his biggest pass play was on a trick play where he hit Foster Moreau for a 30-yard touchdown. However, he does not look like an NFL starting quarterback and should not be played in fantasy leagues next week against a Bucs team that will likely need to win to make the playoffs.
