The former UT-San Antonio track star may be perfectly nick-named the “Splendid Sprinter,” but his football skill hasn’t gotten him on the field in two years with the Cowboys. If he ever makes a contribution, it will likely be on special teams.

A 6-foot-3, 200-pound converted wideout, Williams will be the Colts’ No. 4 cornerback Sunday against the Patriots. He should mostly play special teams.

Williams played 41 defensive snaps last game against the Saints after playing just eight in the first five weeks. He was another body tried in coverage as the Panthers attempted to fix a leaky pass defense.

Williams played 49 defensive snaps last season before landing on I.R. in October due to a knee injury. His main contributions will come on special teams.

Williams’ injury was essentially non-contact, which is never a good sign with Achilles’ ailments. The reserve wideout/special teamer was signed in October.

It’s a crushing, season-ending blow for the fourth-year wideout out of Texas-San Antonio. Primarily a special teamer, Williams notched one catch in three games this season.

WR Teddy Williams (Achilles’) was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding roster move. Originally signed in April, McCann was released at final cuts. McCann has 29 games of NFL experience, and will contribute on special teams in the desert.

A 2010 undrafted free agent, Williams entered the NFL as a receiver out of Texas-San Antonio, but converted to corner for the Colts in 2012. He moved back to wideout for Arizona last season, but landed on injured reserve with a torn Achilles’ tendon in November. Whatever his position, Williams will be a long-shot to crack the 53-man roster.

Williams keeps getting looks around the league, but he’s played one non-special teams snap since entering the league in 2010. He didn’t play college football. The Panthers described Williams as a “four-phase special teamer,” and he should have the inside track on a 53-man roster spot.
