Haley pitched well in 2012 when healthy, posting a 2.33 ERA with 49 strikeouts over 38 2/3 innings across three levels. He’s now protected from the Rule 5 Draft.

Haley’s DFA made room for John Axford on the 40-man roster. The Axford signing was announced on Sunday. Haley, 23, spent the 2013 season with Double-A Akron, posting a 4.70 ERA in 44 innings spanning 39 relief appearances. He struck out 46 and unintentionally walked 38 batters.

Haley cleared waivers after he was designated for assignment last week to make room for John Axford on the 40-man roster. The 23-year-old posted a 4.70 ERA and 46/39 K/BB ratio over 44 innings this past season in Double-A.

The 25-year-old right-hander has struggled at Triple-A Indianapolis this season, registering a 6.66 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 19/20 K/BB ratio across 24 1/3 innings. There’s a decent chance he passes through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as bullpen depth for the Pirates.

The 26-year-old hurler spent the 2016 season in the Pirates’ organization, posting a 5.50 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 43/43 K/BB ratio over 55 2/3 innings between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis. He’ll add minor league bullpen depth for the O’s.

Haley posted a 2.45 ERA in 43 appearances last season between the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the Indians, but that came with 32 walks in 55 innings. Control has been an issue for the hard-throwing 25-year-old right-hander throughout his professional baseball career. He’ll have an outside shot at landing a spot in the Pirates’ Opening Day bullpen.

The Pirates signed Haley over the winter after he posted a 2.45 ERA with 9.8 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9 over 43 relief appearances with the Indians’ Double- and Triple-A affiliates last season. The 25-year-old will serve as bullpen depth in the minors.
