FS Reshad Jones is expected to start Thursday’s game against the Cowboys.
Jones sustained a knee injury back on Oct. 17 and Tyrone Culver filled in well enough to make this a competition. But Jones started last week’s win over the Bills and is now locked in going forward. In six starts this season, Jones has 37 tackles and one sack.
  • FA Defensive Back
Reshad Jones is penciled in as the Dolphins’ starting free safety.
Jones split time with with Tyrone Culver last season, compiling 60 tackles and two sacks in his 12 starts. But even if Jones does win the full-time job this season, there’s more IDP upside at the strong safety spot currently held by Chris Clemons. Yeremiah Bell had 107 tackles out of that position last season.
  • FA Defensive Back
Dolphins released S Tyrone Culver; waived LB Jonathan Freeny.
A six-year veteran, Culver appeared in all 16 games for the Dolphins last season, starting four. He tallied 36 tackles, but doesn’t have an interception since 2009. He’s not going to be greeted by a robust market.
  • FA Defensive Back
Dolphins signed S Tyrone Culver and OT Patrick Brown.
Culver played 62 games with the Dolphins from 2008-2011. He was also with the team in training camp, so he’s familiar with Kevin Coyle’s defense. Brown played 16 games with the Vikings last season and will add depth with Jake Long out. DB Anderson Russell was waived in a corresponding move.
  • FA Guard #75
Dolphins signed G/T Nate Garner and S Tyrone Culver to one-year contract extensions through 2012.
Garner can play four positions on the offensive line and is the Fins’ first lineman off the bench. We suspect he’ll start games at right tackle this year, because the Marc Colombo experiment is a poor bet to work. Culver is a career special teamer. Last season, he racked up 10 tackles in kick and punt coverage.
  • FA Defensive Back
Dolphis FS Chris Clemons is expected to be active this week for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury in the season opener.
Clemons encountered numerous setbacks with the hamstring injury. He’s since lost his starting job to Reshad Jones, who is currently sidelined by a knee injury. Tyrone Culver is penciled in as the starter opposite Yeremiah Bell this week.
  • FA Defensive Back
Chris Clemons ran as the Dolphins’ first-team free safety for the duration of Wednesday’s OTA practice.
Rookie Reshad Jones ran with the twos, while supposed fellow competitor Tyrone Culver ran strictly with the backups at strong safety. Clemons clearly has the early edge in the battle to replace the departed Gibril Wilson.
  • NYJ Coaching Staff
Safety Marquand Manuel will likely be cut by the Packers.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette suggests Manuel will be gone “barring a collapse by [Atari] Bigby or inept performances by [Tyrone] Culver and [Charlie] Peprah” in Thursday night’s final preseason game.
  • FA Defensive Back
Packers placed S Tyrone Culver on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.
The heady but athletically limited Culver was a sixth-round rookie in 2006. Culver will undergo shoulder surgery and try to make the club in 2008.
  • FA Defensive Back
Dolphins signed S Tyrone Culver to a two-year extension through 2011.
It’s essentially a new three-year, $3.225M deal. Culver, 26, has never started a game in three pro seasons, but contributes on special teams and in dime packages. Culver makes up for a lack of standout physical skills with smarts and instincts. He’d step in if anything happened to FS Gibril Wilson.
