Severino

Severino has been cut loose to pursue a more lucrative opportunity overseas in Japan, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. The 31-year-old passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from New York’s 40-man roster last week. He didn’t end up making an appearance for the Mets after signing a minor league contract last offseason.

Severino winds up losing his spot on New York’s 40-man roster with Cionel Pérez coming up from Triple-A Syracuse. The 31-year-old lefty has pitched well in the minors this season, but the Mets haven’t given him a look yet. There should be some interest on waivers from other teams.

Severino has posted a 1.04 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 18/8 K/BB ratio in 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season for the Mets. Rather than lose him to another team, the Mets decided to add him to the 40-man roster and then send him back to Triple-A. To free up space on the 40-man roster, the Mets transferred Clay Holmes to the 60-day IL.

A former Yankees prospect, Severino, 31, hasn’t pitched in the U.S. since 2022, when he made his major league debut with the White Sox despite pitching to an 11.40 ERA in Triple-A (he allowed five runs in 7 1/3 innings in his six MLB appearances). However, he’s coming off a fine season in Mexico in which he posted a 2.32 ERA in 42 2/3 innings of relief, and he’s currently up to 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the Dominican Winter League. That’ll get him a look in camp.

Severino made six relief appearances for the big league club and allowed five runs on seven hits with a 9/4 K/BB ratio. He should serve as organizational depth for the White Sox going forward.

The 27-year-old left-hander made six relief appearances earlier this year in the majors, allowing five runs on seven hits with a 9/4 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 frames.

Severino will head back to the minors after allowing five runs on seven hits with a 9/4 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings (six appearances) in his first taste of the majors. The 27-year-old lefty shouldn’t have to wait too long for another opportunity at the big-league level.

Severino recorded a pristine 2.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 53/32 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings last year between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. The 27-year-old lefty is expected to help replace Lucas Giolito (abdomen) in the White Sox’ pitching plans over the next few weeks.

Severino was added to the White Sox’ 40-man roster last November after recording a pristine 2.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 53/32 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings last year between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. The 27-year-old lefty could make his big-league debut later this season. Chicago has 34 players left in major-league camp.
