It was more of the same at Whistling Straits on Saturday. With the U.S. Team beginning the day with a comfortable 6-2 lead, the Americans extended the edge through their morning foursomes’ efforts.
Winning their third consecutive session with a score of 3 to 1, the U.S. overnight lead grew to 9 to 3 by lunchtime. With some head scratching decisions made by Captain Padraig Harrington, the European Team, outside of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, was once again overmatched.

Putting up his strongest lineup of the week in the afternoon four-ball session, it may have been too little too late for the Europeans. Capturing two out of four possible points in the afternoon, strong play from the Spanish duo and Shane Lowry kept the Americans within a putter’s length.
That is if your putter is as long as Bryson DeChambeau’s as the U.S. Team will take an 11 to 5 lead into tomorrow’s Singles matches. With previous Ryder Cup comebacks coming from as far as a 10 to 6 hole, no team has ever been able to overcome a six-point deficit on Sunday.
The oddsmakers at PointsBet Sportsbook agree that this Ryder Cup is all but wrapped up. With the U.S. Team needing only 3 1/2 points, they are listed as heavy favorites heading into the final day of play. As such, we look to the singles matches for some potential wagers.

Ryder Cup Day 3 Plays (Odds Via PointsBet):
Xander Schauffele (-120) over Rory McIlroy
There is always, and I mean always a possibility McIlroy finds form out of thin air, but we will side with Schauffele regardless. It has been a tale of two Ryder Cups for these players with Schauffele going 3-0 to this point and McIlroy posting a career worst record of 0-3.
While the Northern Irishman has been paired with a disappointing Ian Poulter twice, McIlroy’s play has been arguably worse than the Englishman’s. Having only one par-breaker to his name, the fireworks which McIlroy possessed throughout the 2020-2021 season are nowhere to be found.
As for the Olympic gold medalist, every time he appears on the television, a long putt seems to be holed. Having rested in the afternoon session on Saturday, he should be itching to take it to the European. Winning his singles match in the 2019 Presidents Cup, he has fared a bit better than his competitor in this format as McIlroy has lost his last two singles to Patrick Reed and Justin Thomas.
Oddly enough, McIlroy was off first in both of those Ryder Cups as well, perhaps indicating he does not enjoy batting leadoff. Nevertheless, I believe it is wise to target some of these early matches as those later in the day may be meaningless when all is said and done.
