There’s a new number one in the world of golf and his name is Scottie Scheffler. The University of Texas product was once thought of as the best player without a win on the PGA Tour. He’s now the new world No. 1 after winning the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, which was his third win in the last month and half.

This week the tour stops at TPC San Antonio for the 100th anniversary of the Valero Texas Open. The 7,438-yard par-72 Oaks course plays host to a field with multiple major champions and past Texas Open winners. The field is highlighted by odds-on favorite Rory McIlroy (+750) and defending champion Jordan Spieth (+1200).

With just one week before the Masters, golfers who have yet to qualify for this year’s tournament have an opportunity to do so by winning the Texas Open. Two years ago, we saw Monday qualifier Corey Conners outlast Charley Hoffman to win the 2019 event. Qualifying for the 2019 Masters, where he went on to finish T46.

For many, this is the last tune up before they head to Augusta next week. Looking at the field there are a few golfers who could use the tune up. First that comes to mind is Hideki Matsuyama (+1600) who was forced to from the Players Championship due to a back injury. The other, Bryson DeChambeau (+2200). DeChambeau is playing here for the first time since 2017 where he missed the cut. A tune up for him is wise. Last week was his competitive round of golf since the end of January.

If I were to consider any first looks for this event, it’s hard to ignore Charley Hoffman at +60000. The 2016 champion finished second here in back-to-back starts in 2019 and 2021. Another name who has an interesting price is Rickie Fowler (+70000). Flower has yet to qualify for the Masters and he knows the only way he will ward off back-to-back missed trips to Augusta is to win this weekend. The last opening price I have my eyes on is Jhonattan Vegas at +5000. Vegas finished T4 last week at the Corales Puntacana Championship. Falling just two strokes short of first place should provide Vegas with momentum heading into the Texas Open.
