Alex Wood takes the mound for the Giants and he hasn’t pitched against the White Sox since 2017, back when he was a member of the Dodgers. That was a home game for Wood, so he has never pitched at Guarantee Rate Field.
Chicago only has 30 at-bats (4th-fewest) versus LHP this season but has hit .267 (T-14th) with six strikeouts (2nd-fewest). Last season, the White Sox hit .271 versus LHP (2nd) with 271 strikeouts (3rd-fewest), plus top 10 ranks in OBP (.337), SLG (.430) and OPS (.767).
The only LHP to face the White Sox this year was the Astro’s Framber Valdez and Chicagon won 3-2, scoring all three runs in the 8th and 9th innings. Valdez surrendered six hits and delivered four strikeouts over 5.0 innings with no earned runs.
Wood has not made a start this season but owned a 5.51 ERA on the road with a 5-7 record over 14 starts and 67.0 innings. In Spring Training, Wood posted a 3.50 ERA over four starts with 15.0 innings and 24 strikeouts to six walks.
Lance Lynn takes the mound for the White Sox and is looking for a bounce back after taking a no-decision on the road in Houston, a game where the Astros won.
Last season versus San Francisco, Lynn went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts, two walks and no earned runs in a 1-0 win. In five games this year, the Giants are hitting .218 (25th) with the second-most strikeouts (63) and second-fewest hits (37).
This is a good spot to back the home White Sox versus a LHP making his first start of the year and fade the road team that has struggled to hit.
