The 162-game Major League Baseball season is officially in full swing. It may be a little early to start thinking about each league’s Most Valuable Players but nonetheless, I decided to hit up our partners at PointsBet to see what kind of action they were getting on the game’s most prestigious individual awards.
American League MVP
Shohei Ohtani +1100, Los Angeles Angels
It should come as no surprise that Ohtani is getting a ton of love in the AL MVP market. To be honest, it should be expected when you can bat over .300 and hit 101 mph on the radar gun. Our generation has truly never seen anything like this before. Currently, PointsBet is reporting that Ohtani is leading the market with a whopping 25% of bets placed, and when it comes to handle the number gets even higher. Ohtani backers are responsible for 54% of the money in the American League MVP market and as a result, Ohtani represents a pretty significant liability for PointsBet.

Tim Anderson +3300, Chicago White Sox
I was shocked to hear that Tim Anderson was a name that was seeing action in the AL MVP market. Despite an early trip to the IL with a hamstring injury, Anderson is off to a great start this season. Batting .364 with 2 homers and a .939 OPS, PointsBet is reporting that the White Sox shortstop is second in bets taken with 10% percent of the wagers. So far those wagers are not making a dent as he is outside of the top five in money handle. After Ohtani, Yoan Moncada (+4000) at 8% and Eloy Jimenez at 5% round out the money leaders in the American League market. Jimenez is potentially out for the season following a torn pectoral.

National League MVP
Ronald Acuna +350, Atlanta Braves
Braves youngster Ronald Acuna is leading the National League MVP race both on and off the field. Acuna is batting .419 with 7 homers, 16 RBIs and a .486 OBP. Acuna was injured earlier this week but so far reports are optimistic and he remains day-to-day. Acuna backers are responsible for 21% of the bets in the market and 30% of the money wagered.
Juan Soto +700, Washington Nationals
Washington Nationals hitting machine Juan Soto has the second-shortest odds, second amount of bets (16%), and second amount of money wagered (16%) in the NL MVP market. The Nationals are off to a slow start but Soto is batting .302 with a pair of homers and 8 RBI to start the season. Behind Soto in the NL MVP race are Padres slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. and Mets ace Jacob deGrom. At +4000 with 9% of the handle, deGrom is the biggest liability in the NL MVP market.
