The Chicago White Sox are in first place in the American League Central, but the betting markets are moving against them tonight.
Minnesota opened as a -115 road favorite with Jose Berrios (4-3, 4.40 ERA) battling Chicago righty Dylan Cease (5-2, 3.33 ERA). PointsBet Sportsbook is now dealing Twins -140 while other places around the country have climbed as high as -145.
“Berrios stills gets respect in the betting market even though he’s had a so-so season,” Westgate SuperBook senior baseball trader Randy Blum told NBC Sports. “This match up is actually pretty even if you look at this season alone.”
A deeper dive using Rotoworld’s Edge Finder uncovered this gem: The Twins are 11-1 over the last three seasons when Berrios starts against the White Sox. A $100 bettor is up almost $600 just betting Berrios blindly. Not too shabby.[[ad:athena]]
One professional bettor I know is very bullish on his anti-White Sox stance and I know he’s not alone. He believes they’re doing it all smoke and mirrors in a weak division hitting homers against a plethora of bad pitchers. There may be some truth to that, although this bettor may or may not be a Cubs fan.
Anyways... the betting markets have certainly seen respected money on the Twins. There’s no ignoring a 30 cent move against a first place baseball team.
And while Blum obviously had to move his betting line to stay competitive, he respects what the younger Cease has done so far in his second season with Chicago.
“He throws hard but more importantly, his fastballs have movement,” he analyzed. “It’s tough to square up. His breaking pitches have all improved this year. The control is still a work in progress though, as it is for most young pitchers.”
