Chiefs outright loss killed countless parlays

When one of the biggest NFL favorites on the board loses outright, it’s generally a decent Sunday for a sportsbook.

So when the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Las Vegas Raiders as a 10.5-point home favorite, sportsbooks around the country rejoiced. The Raiders’ win was one of the biggest decisions of the year for many trading rooms.

“It was a decent day for us,” PointsBet Sportsbook senior sports analyst Andrew Mannino told NBC Sports. “The Raiders pulling off the upset was massive. We did really well on the Vikings covering on Sunday night too. And we lost pretty heavily on the Cardinals.”[[ad:athena]]

Betting against the Jets is clearly a brilliant idea. They are now 0-and-5 against the spread this season and 12-24-and-1 ATS since 2018 according to Rotoworld’s Edge Finder.

I felt it was necessary to peel back the onion a little more on this Chiefs loss. So I pressed Mannino on all the different ways that a Kansas City outright loss helps the bottom line. Customers are clearly firing more than just straight bets. When the Super Bowl favorite loses as a double-digit favorite, it also kills a ridiculous amount of teasers, parlays and moneyline parlays.

“People love their parlays and most parlays usually have big favorites or short moneylines,” Mannino explained. “They’re included in almost every permutation or combination. Especially when a bet is supposed to be a ‘lock’ like Kansas City was supposed to be. When an upset like that happens, it throws off countless parlays across the board.”

Bingo.

So what does the house need on Monday night?

“The action is close to even on the point spread,” Mannino said while scrolling down his screen. “There’s been more love on the Saints as we get closer to kickoff. Once again, it’s Monday night, so you know we’re rooting for the dog to cover and the Under.”
