Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the new captain of the Miami Dolphins’ boat.
Head coach Brian Flores named Tagovailoa the starter last week over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. Miami is currently a four-point home underdog to the L.A. Rams this Sunday with a total of 46. And we’ve already discussed Tua’s minimal impact to the point spread.
PointsBet Sportsbook has created a few special season long props for Tagovailoa with likely more to follow in the coming days. They’re dealing Tua’s regular season touchdown passes at O/U 11.5 juiced -115 each way and his regular season passing yards at O/U 1,999.5 with the same juice.[[ad:athena]]
Assuming Tua starts and plays in all 10 remaining games, the math comes out to just over a touchdown pass a game with an average of 199.5 yards through the air. Hmmm.
PointsBet also has a market on which Dolphins player will catch Tua’s first career touchdown pass if you’re into roulette-style bets. DeVante Parker is the favorite at +325, followed by Mike Gesicki at +430, Preston Williams +550, Myles Gaskin at +550 and Isaiah Ford at +650. Jordan Howard is the biggest long shot on the board at +4000.
And even though Tua has only completed two passes for nine yards, he’s already fourth on the PointsBet odds sheet for Offensive Rookie of the Year at +1500. Justin Herbert leads the way at -175, Joe Burrow checks in at +225 then Justin Jefferson is third at +1200.
“Football fans are beyond pumped to watch Tua take the field this weekend,” PointsBet director of communications Patrick Eichner told NBC Sports. “It’s important to do our part as a sportsbook and source of entertainment in providing as many special bet types as possible to capitalize on the excitement.”
You would think there are more props on the horizon, maybe some performance pools with fellow rookie quarterbacks Burrow and Herbert. I personally suggested a prop on which former Alabama player would score the most touchdowns this weekend. Think of all the possibilities with Tua, Julio Jones, Derrick Henry, Mark Ingram, Amari Cooper, Josh Jacobs and Henry Ruggs to name a few.
“That would be a nightmare to price,” PointsBet senior sports analyst Andrew Mannino added. “Pretty good idea though. We’re doing our best as far as creativity goes.”
So much for my tenure as an oddsmaker.
Stay tuned for more betting options on Tagovailoa. We’ll be sure to report anything new that comes across the screen in the coming days.
