If you turned off Sunday Night Football early last night, you missed a wild stat from play-by-play man Mike Tirico. After another easy primetime Over – 67 points between the Packers and Saints – Tirico tossed a nugget to his partner Cris Collinsworth about the amount of scoring so far this season.
“Let’s put a period on this whole week in the NFL,” Tirico said. “Through three weeks, 51 points per game is the average. Even if tomorrow night’s game with Kansas City and Baltimore is scoreless, it’ll still be the NFL record for the most points after three weeks.”
“Wow,” Collinsworth replied while shaking his head and laughing.[[ad:athena]]
51 points per game across the entire league is truly insane. Three games is obviously a very small sample size and that could easily regress, but these elite offenses are humming.
The thought of Kansas City and Baltimore going scoreless is hilarious too.
The point total opened at 52 and PointsBet Sportsbook is already dealing 54.5. I imagine that total is only going to get higher as we get closer to kickoff. In years past, I used to love to let the primetime totals rise up and play Under at the highest point. That strategy died when the Rams and Chiefs combined for 105 points a couple years back.
According to Rotoworld’s Edge Finder, Overs are 9-and-6 in Week 3 heading into tonight’s tilt and 29-and-18 (62%) altogether.
“It’s honestly getting ridiculous,” a longtime Vegas oddsmaker told NBC Sports in anonymity. “You can’t make these totals 60-65 points, because you would get blasted with Under money and you could be in big trouble. Take that Saints-Packers game last night, I saw that total (O/U 53) and knew it was probably a loser. Teams fall out of bed and score 30 in the NFL. Especially the good offensive teams.”
Ironically enough, both teams rolled out of bed and scored 30. Packers 37, Saints 30.
Back to tonight’s game. You can actually bet your own totals at PointsBet. It’s an adjusted total that gives you juicier odds. Some examples: Over 60 points (+144), Over 65 (+225), Over 70 (+325), Over 74.5 (+460). Or if you’re feeling contrarian: Under 50 (+146), Under 45 (+245), Under 40 (+475), Under 34.5 (+1100).
If you’re feeling super froggy, you can bet on zero touchdowns at 100-to-1.
I’m actually going to sit this one out and just enjoy the fireworks. Most people love to see points and Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes should provide plenty.
