He owns 21 Grand Slam titles in his Hall of Fame career. He is undoubtedly on the Mt. Rushmore of all-time greats in the world of tennis. On clay, Rafael Nadal is not one of, but is THE greatest player in the history of the sport. His record at Roland Garros is staggering – 110 victories in 113 matches.

That said, question marks and whispers were cropping up around the Spaniard following losses to Carlos Alcaraz and Denis Shapovalov in the build-up to the fortnight in Paris. Can he go the distance and claim title 14 at Roland-Garros? Seems more and more likely through three straight set victories on the red clay.

The team at NBC Sports EDGE is chronicling his play in Paris at the 2022 French Open with reports following each of his matches. The team also will look ahead to the following round and Nadal’s next opponent.

The French Open Quarterfinals vs. Novak Djokovic

In the 59th meeting between these two GOATS, Rafael Nadal won the first and third set before rallying in the 4th to win the match in a tiebreak and avenge his loss to Novak in last year’s French Open semis.

Nadal is now 29-30 all-time against Djokovic. More in the moment, he is now 2-2 all-time in the French Open against Djokovic. Rafa certainly now sees a clear path to French Open Title #14

The French Open Semifinals vs. Alexander Zverev

Zverev’s pursuit of his first Grand Slam title continues following his four-set win over Carlos Alcaraz. With the win, Zverev snapped the 19-year old Alcaraz’ 14-match win streak.

This will be the 10th meeting all-time between Zverev and Nadal with Rafa having won six of the first nine, but Alexander having won three of the last four. The two have never met on the red clay at Roland Garros.

May 29, 2022 Rafael Nadal vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime

This was a battle for Nadal. A day after watching his favorite club, Real Madrid, defeat Liverpool in the Champions’ League Final, Rafa was forced to go five sets to defeat the 21-year-old Canadian. The two combined for an astounding 97 winners. It was not until Nadal broke the 9th-seeded Auger-Aliassime in the seventh game in the fifth set (his sixth break of serve in the match) that Rafa felt secure in the match. It was only the third five-set match Nadal has ever played at Roland Garros. Prior to today’s match, Nadal had not lost a set in the 2022 French Open.
