Iowa quietly gave Fran McCaffery massive contract buyout after 24-point loss

Fran McCaffery’s job probably wasn’t going to be in jeopardy this offseason, but he’s certainly had enough struggles that it was a question that had popped up in recent weeks.

The Iowa head coach is currently in his eighth season with the Hawkeyes. He’s been to three NCAA tournaments, but is on the verge of missing out of the Big Dance for the second season in a row. Iowa is 11-11 on the season and just 2-7 in a bad Big Ten.

At best, it’s been a forgettable year that should have Iowa seriously considering whether or not next year should be the end of McCaffery’s tenure. But that is not the case, not after the contract that he stealthily signed on November 29th.

According to Land Of 10, who obtained the contract, McCaffery not only got a raise and an extension, but the school all-but ensured that he will be coaching them for, at minimum, the next two seasons. McCaffery originally had a buyout of $4.6 million if he were to be fired this spring. That number was bumped up to $10.2 million. The buyout will still be $9 million if they opt to fire him after next season.

The best part of this contract is that it was signed the day after Iowa lost, 79-55, at Virginia Tech, a loss that dropped Iowa to 4-3 on the season and sparked a four-game losing streak.

So, Hawkeye fans, I hope you like Fran McCaffery.

Because he and his sideline outbursts are going to be the face of your program for the foreseeable future.

Good luck!
