Some scary news out of the Big East on Saturday afternoon as Providence head coach Ed Cooley left the Friars’ road contest against Xavier and went to a local hospital in the middle of the game.

According to a report from Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal, Cooley appeared to be ill during the game. McNamara believed that Cooley had an upset stomach and the Providence head coach headed to a local hospital to be checked out.

Fox reported during halftime of the Villanova/Georgetown game that Cooley was experiencing breathing issues.

McNamara gave an update on Cooley’s status after the game as the head coach won’t travel back with the team and will stay overnight in a Cincinnati hotel for observation. His condition will be updated on Sunday, according to a Providence spokesman, and ESPN‘s Jeff Goodman reported that Cooley is okay. There is still no word on why Cooley was officially admitted.

With Cooley leaving in the middle of the game, Providence was coached by assistants Andre LaFleur and Bob Simon in a 78-69 loss to Xavier.
