Arizona coach Sean Miller is the new king of recruiting. At least until the spring.
That’s when Kentucky is expected to add at least one more top-rated recruit to its class of 2012, which would give coach John Calipari the top class every year he’s been at the school.
The only different between the 2012 group and his last two classes is the new crop took a bit longer to convince. The latest was Alex Poythress, a 6-8 forward and consensus Top 20 prospect who committed on Thursday.
He joins shooting guard Archie Goodwin and center Willie Cauley, both of whom signed with Kentucky the last few months. They’re also elite prospects.
“The thing about this class for Kentucky this year, the sum is bigger than the parts,” ESPN.com national analyst Dave Telep told the Louisville Courier-Journal. “They’re adding a whole bunch of really good players.
“You could see things were building again and now boom, they have the No. 2 class in the country, and they’re not finished.”
Calipari hasn’t gotten everyone he wanted, though. Just in the last month, he missed out players who committed to Michigan State, Syracuse and Kansas. Arizona has the same number of 5-star prospects, but another recruit as well.
However, the chances of overtaking Arizona in the rankings seems to be in Kentucky’s favor. Even if they miss on No. 1 overall recruit Shabazz Muhammad, they’re in the running for three other Top 30 prospects. And it’d be dumb to think Calipari won’t get at least one.
