Simply put, there was never, ever another college football program like the Miami Hurricanes in the eighties. If you were not a fan of The U, you more than likely utterly despised the ‘Canes and the way they “carried” themselves both on and off the field.
As far as SI.com is concerned, the 1986 edition of the Hurricanes is the most hated team of all time. In all of team sports.
Somehow, I think the likes of Michael Irvin, Brian and Bennie Blades, Jerome Brown (RIP), Alonzo Highsmith et al would take great pleasure in both the honor and the words used to summarize why there’s so much contempt on the part of the website in their team:
Not only weren’t the ’86 ‘Canes the only college football team on SI.com‘s Top-Twenty Five list, they weren’t even the only Miami football team to make the cut.
The ’90 ‘Canes came in at No. 11, and were joined by USC’s 2005 team (15th) and Notre Dame’s 1993 squad (17th).
