Al Borges resurfaces as San Jose State’s OC

Off the sidelines for the 2014 season, Al Borges has officially returned to the coaching game.

In a press release sent out Thursday night, San Jose State announced that Borges has been hired as Ron Caragher‘s offensive coordinator. Borges will also serve as the Spartans’ quarterbacks coach.

Caragher and Borges have a previous working relationship, having served on the same coaching staff at UCLA from 1996-2000. Borges was the Bruins’ coordinator during that time, while Caragher was on the staff as wide receivers coach.

The last 28 years of Borges’ coaching career have been as a coordinator, with the most recent stop being at Michigan. He spent three seasons with the Wolverines before being dismissed following the 2013 season and replaced by Doug Nussmeier.

In addition to UM and UCLA, Borges spent time as a coordinator at San Diego State (2009-10), Auburn (2004-07), Indiana (2002-03), Cal (2001), Boise State and Portland State (1986-92).

Borges wasn’t the only hire with a recent Ann Arbor connection made by Caragher as Dan Ferrigno was added as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. Ferrigno had spent the past four seasons in the same two capacities with the Wolverines.
