Arizona State athletics memo: Uniforms should primarily be maroon and gold

In an act sure to please the college football uniform gods and critics alike, Arizona State is attempting to do something that seems almost unordinary in this day and age of flashy uniforms. Arizona State wants to make it a point to stick to the actual school colors of maroon and gold. A bold decision, indeed.

Arizona State has new protocols for how uniforms will be handled, and it is clear the emphasis is to stay true to the school colors and prevent from going too far off the deep end of trendy and flashy uniform designs like all-black and all-white alternate uniform combinations the Sun Devils have been known to dabble in recent years. But this doesn’t mean Arizona State will stick to one home and one road uniform combo the way schools like Alabama, Penn State and USC do. There is still some wiggle room for some design alternatives.

As outlined by The Arizona Republic, some guidelines for Arizona State football moving forward will include:

  • Black uniforms are allowed but must use maroon and gold. Basically, black uniforms are allowed but numbers will be in school colors.
  • Copper may be used, but once again the school colors must be used as an accent color.
  • Throwback uniforms are still cool, so long as they are attached to a certain accomplishment in program history.
  • All proposed uniform designs must be approved by Senior Associate Athletic Director Scottie Graham and Associate Athletic Director Becky Parker, and then by Vice President of Athletics Ray Anderson.

Now let’s see how Arizona State handles this for the football program. The Sun Devils have used alternate uniforms to attract the attention of recruits because high school football players can be easily impressed by awful-looking uniforms. Now, what can they cook up under these stricter policies?
