In an announcement made Tuesday afternoon, the Beavers have confirmed that John Garrett has been hired as the Beavers’ new coordinator. Gilbert will replace Danny Langsdorf, who left late last month to take the quarterbacks job with the New York Giants.
In addition to his coordinator title, Garrett, the brother of Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, will also serve as OSU’s quarterbacks and tight ends coach.
“John comes from a great football family and brings with him to Oregon State a wealth of knowledge about the game,” head coach Mike Riley said in a statement. “His responsibilities will include being the offensive coordinator as well as the quarterbacks and tight ends coach with assistance from our graduate assistant coaches. In addition to his NFL experience, he has coached at the college level and knows the recruiting aspects of the game at this level.”
Garrett spent the 2013 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as wide receivers coach. Prior to that, he was an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys from 2007-12. His last job at the collegiate level came as receivers coach at Virginia (2004-06).
Riley and Garrett have a previous relationship, with the latter playing wide receiver for the San Antonio Riders when the former was the coach of the World League team.
“I’m excited to be joining the coaching staff at Oregon State University,” Garrett said. “I have tremendous respect for what Coach Riley, his staff and players have accomplished over the years and I look forward to being part of the program’s continued success. I consider it an honor to represent `Beaver Nation’ as a coach for Oregon State.”
