Bellotti’s name being connected to potential opening at Wazzu

The body of Paul Wulff‘s coaching career isn’t even in the casket yet, and there’s already a mourner that appears ready to hit on his soon-to-be former school.

Speculation has been burning fast and furious that Wulff will be fired by Washington State at some point shortly after Saturday’s Apple Cup game with Washington. One name that’s already being mentioned in connection to the potential opening is former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti.

Bellotti just happens to be extremely tight with Wazzu athletic director Bill Moos, so connecting the dots between the two is natural. Asked Tuesday by the Tacoma News Tribune if he would have an interest in a job that has not yet come open, Bellotti said he hadn’t “done that much studying on that job” but did not outright deny any interest.

Bill and I are very close friends,” the current ESPN college football analyst said of the man who will decide Wulff’s fate. “If we talk about it at some point, that’s one thing, but we haven’t had any discussions. ...

“I don’t know [if there would be interest]. That hasn’t happened, so I wouldn’t even conjecture if that would go.”

This is the second time this year that Bellotti’s spoken publicly about his connection to a college job; early last month, Bellotti admitted that he had spoken to Colorado about their opening, but then pulled his name from consideration a little over a week later.
